(Teresa) Week1 : Process Writing

Increase the level of your writing process. How to cross the stalemate without being discouraged?

Sometimes we can feel frustrated when we perceive that our competence and writing skills seem to be strongly attached to the monotony just because we feel comfortable at one particular level. Comfort and fear are potential enemies that prevent us from developing our writing process, and this can sometimes turn the writing process  into  a very tedious task.

The first step is to write, and it does not matter the quality of the content but the regularity and how often we write, we  do not need a very long content, in fact we are already writing constantly, it is not necessary to be writers in order to do it well , just dedicate a few minutes to the day and internalize it as a routine. Get started!

These ideas that seem piled up in our  head when writing  need clarity in order to to be able to express them correctly on paper.

1. Do not panic!  The first step is already doing well; The brainstorming process:
We refer to this as a really useful technique when it comes to writing but if we really want it to work, we have to avoid the judgment and eliminate all criticism that judges our grammar or fear of failure; Let the creativity flow, before writing.  During this process we have to write as many ideas as possible, so that later we will select the most valuable ones or those that we consider most appropriate in the context.

2. Read as much as you can
We do not say that you need to have the dictionary next to you, looking for each word but when reading you will improve global  comprehension , it will help you to internalize the grammatical structures and of course you will learn new vocabulary.

3. Brush up grammar from time to time
It is important to move forward, and our grammar takes umbrage when we are long periods without checking it out.

4. Learn the basic rules of sentence constituents
They are basic  that will help you to form increasingly long and complex sentences
  • Subject – Verb
  • Subject – Verb – Object
  • Subject –Verb – Adjective
  • Subject – Verb – Adverb
  • Subject – Verb – Noun
5. Learn how to write an outline
The organization of those ideas of which we have previously spoken, when we referred to Brainstorming, it is time to select and put them in a consistent order so that it is clear how to start writing and develop our theme.

6. Learn how to organize a paragraph
It must contain a Topic Sentence (to summarize what we are going to talk about)
Supporting Sentences (which support the ideas of which we are referring) and a Conclusion (that demonstrates in a concise way what we have explained)  and is very important that the conclusion  does not contain any new ideas  that dismantles our argument, if not the reader would be hesitant about what he is reading.

7. Corrective feedback one we have finished
Both oral and written feedback from a teacher or tutor can help us internalize grammatical errors and  lack of coherence,  when we are learning to improve our writing process.

8. Thesaurus & online resources
There are wide range of efficient online resources that we can use to improve our level.

To conclude; just remember... Practice makes perfect! no matter how good you become, you must remain open to constructive criticism, of course,  the results are not seen from one day to the next,  but it is important to be motivated. No one is born knowing.
